Chartered in 1893, Tacony Lodge No. 600 is celebrating 125 years of Freemasonry in the same neighborhood it was founded. At a time when Freemasonry was expanding in the City of Philadelphia and in the nation, a group of Masons met and decided to petition the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania for a charter to open a Masonic lodge in the neighborhood where they lived and worked. Lodges already existed in the Kensington and Frankford neighborhoods, but not yet in Tacony. The charter was quickly approved by the Grand Lodge and with Kensington Lodge No. 211 as a sponsor, Tacony Lodge No. 600 was chartered!

In the first 72 years of its existence, Tacony Lodge No. 600 met at the Tacony Savings Fund, Safe Deposit, Title and Trust Co. building, later renamed the Tacony Trust Co., situated on Tulip Street and Longshore Avenue, the main business section of Tacony at that time. The trust company and post office took up the first floor. The third floor contained the lodge room and the second floor the social room. This building is still standing today, though used for various purposes and by different tenants.

The lodge quickly grew its membership to the point that the current meeting place was no longer meeting the needs of the lodge. A committee was formed for the purpose of finding a property to build a new home for the lodge. On January 22, 1963, a piece of property located on Magee Avenue was purchased from the Magnolia Cemetery Company after long and persuasive negotiations.

The Ground Breaking Ceremony took place on Saturday, September 12, 1964. It was a cool and rainy day. Appropriate Masonic Ceremonies were performed by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday, May 18, 1965, the first Stated Meeting of Tacony Lodge No. 600 at the Tacony Masonic Temple took place. The members and visitors were pleased with their efforts.

The Temple had been unselfishly built with the thought that other Masonic lodges may want to call Tacony Masonic Temple their home as well. Today, three other Masonic lodges, a Court of the Order of Amaranth, and two Masonic Youth Groups call the Tacony Masonic Temple home.

In 2018, Tacony Lodge celebrated its 125th Anniversary with style! A meeting was held in both July and August with the August meeting behind held in Egyptian Hall of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. The lodge banquet hall was updated in preparation for the anniversary. The anniversary meeting took place on November 20 and a Table Lodge was held with the presence of the Right Worshipful Grand Master.

Tacony Lodge No. 600 is one of the last remaining neighborhood lodges in Philadelphia still meeting in the neighborhood of its founding!
